It's never too late to become a UEZ member, even if you've been a long established business.

The benefits of this program far outweigh the paperwork involved and certainly it is worth finding if your business is eligible to obtain this designation. All Newark businesses are eligible if they are located or locating within the Zone, are projecting new employment growth and make good faith effort to fill at least 25% of those new jobs with local residents or other targeted applicants.

How To Apply?
First check on Zone Maps whether your business is located within Zone boundaries or call our office at (973) 424-4154. Applications for certification are available at Newark UEZ Office or you can download them and print from our "Forms" section. Our Office certifies the completeness of the application and the State sends a letter of eligibility within ten working days from submission of the application. The letter establishes when a business has become a qualified UEZ business and is eligible for the benefits. Within three weeks from submission of the application the State Treasury Department issues all UEZ businesses an exemption certificate to be used in the purchasing of otherwise taxable items. In order to charge their customers the reduced sales tax, retailers must complete an additional form and wait for specific authorization to charge the reduced tax

Recertification Process
Each year approximately 10 weeks before the expiration of a business's anniversary date, the State sends a Recertification Form and advises the business and Newark UEZ Office that the Form is due.

Important
If your business was dropped from the UEZ Program in Newark because you were unable to fulfill the hiring requirements, please call Mr. Rafael Zabala at (973) 424-4155 immediately! You may be eligible for reinstatement into the Program without penalty.
