The City of Newark is one of only 35 municipalities participating in the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Program. Few programs have proven more enduring and successful than the UEZ Program. Since its creation, it has been a hallmark for urban revitalization and a cornerstone for economic growth and development. In 1997, the non-partisan National Association of State Development Agencies (NASDA) called the Garden State's UEZ program the "best in the nation".

The Newark Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) was first designated in 1984 and since then, working in concert with the Municipal Council and City Administration, we are helping many Newark businesses to start, grow and flourish. To date, more than 2000 businesses have been registered in the Urban Enterprise Zone program, creating thousands of jobs and investing billions of dollars in their businesses.

Until 2002, the Newark UEZ was administered within the Newark Economic Development Corporation structure. In the summer of 2002, the Office of the Newark Urban Enterprise Zone became part of the Newark Department of Administration. That change put us closer to the City Administration and makes our cooperation with various City Departments and the Municipal Council even more effective.

Our goal, like that of the Mayor, City Administration, and Municipal Council is to attract, retain and help Newark's businesses grow and through the creation of jobs make our city "America’s leading urban city in safety, prosperity, and the nurturing of family life” as Mayor Cory Booker outlined his vision for the future of Newark unveiling his plan for the first 100 days of his term.
